Today tourism is one of the top industries in South Dakota, especially in western South Dakota which is home to the Badlands, the Black Hills, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial. If you’re a motorcycle enthusiast, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August is the place to be. If your interests lie in extinct animals or ancient civilizations there are plenty of opportunities to dig around in a real-life excavation. Some of the world’s richest fossil beds are in the Badlands National Park. One of the world’s largest cave systems lies within the Black Hills and eight Black Hills caves are open to the public. Two of these, Jewel Cave National Monument and Wind Cave National Park, are part of the National Park Service.
